New Colorectal Patients
What to expect at your first appointment.
Please note that Dr. Vikis also performs on-call trauma and urgent cancer surgery, which may lead to unforeseen delays or change of appointments. Please plan accordingly.
Before your first appointment
When you were contacted for your appointment, you should have also received preparation instructions. For our patients, this involves washing out the rectum 3 hours before your appointment time, so that your colorectal surgeon has a clear view of the rectal lining during your examination. The rectal wash, a Fleet Enema (Fleet® enema) may be purchased over the counter at your local pharmacy.
Be prepared
To ensure we have the most up-to-date record of all your medical conditions, surgeries, colonoscopies, and medications, please print out this form, complete it at home, and bring it with you to your appointment.
If you speak little to no English, you will need a translator to accompany you.

During the rectal exam

The internal exam involves inserting an instrument into the rectum to allow your surgeon to identify any abnormalities. Patients lying on their sides find the exam is more comfortable if they bring their knees up and "bear down" when the instrument is first introduced.
